Forthcoming Book

This project is a historical novel about Stormé DeLarverie (1923-2014), a biracial, lesbian whose gender expression did not follow norms nor limited labels of the time. The book follows Stormé throughout her life including her work, key relationships, pivotal events, and experiences. The work is based heavily on years of research, archival material,  genealogical research as well as interviews with over forty people who knew Stormé.

DeLarverie was a protector and connector in LGBTQ+ communities and an integral part of key cultural moments including as a performer in the Jewel Box Revue, her significant role in the Stonewall Rebellion, and a protector throughout Chelsea and Greenwich Village during her lifetime.

Primary and secondary source materials include historical records (local, state, national), interviews, newspaper archives, and DeLarverie’s Collection at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.
